How to Prep for Your Denver In-Home Maternity Session

In-home maternity sessions are all about slowing down, settling in, and capturing this season of life exactly as it feels. Whether you’re nesting in a historic Denver bungalow, a cozy Arvada ranch, a foothills home in Morrison, or a light-filled Boulder space, your home becomes part of the story—and what you wear should feel like a natural extension of it.

If you’re wondering how to prep for an in-home maternity session (especially when it comes to wardrobe), this guide will walk you through it in a way that’s realistic, style-forward, and stress-free.

Why In-Home Maternity Sessions Are So Special

In-home maternity photography focuses less on posing and more on connection, movement, and atmosphere. Your home sets the tone—soft window light, lived-in textures, and familiar spaces create images that feel intimate and timeless.

Because of this, the best outfits are ones that:

  • Feel true to how you actually live

  • Complement your home’s color palette and vibe

  • Allow you to move, sit, lounge, and breathe comfortably

Think elevated everyday wear, not something you’d only wear once for photos.

What to Wear for an In-Home Maternity Session

Dress for the Setting (and Your Real Life)

One of the biggest mistakes I see is choosing something that doesn’t match the environment. For in-home maternity sessions, I recommend outfits you might realistically wear around the house—just more thoughtfully styled.

If your home leans casual and cozy, your outfit should too. If it’s airy and minimal, keep things clean and simple. The goal is cohesion between you and your space.

Option 1: Style-Forward Loungewear

Loungewear is one of my favorite choices for in-home maternity sessions—especially when it’s well-fitted and intentional.

Matching lounge sets, ribbed fabrics, and soft neutral tones photograph beautifully. Brands like Foxy Kind or Worth Collective are a great example of loungewear that feels modern, flattering, and elevated without looking overly styled.

Look for:

  • Coordinated sets (tops + bottoms)

  • Ribbed, waffle, or brushed fabrics

  • Soft neutrals like cream, oatmeal, taupe, sage, or muted blush

These pieces allow you to curl up on the couch, sit on the bed, or move through your home naturally—perfect for storytelling-driven maternity photos. If the belly is out or we can let it out for a few photos- that’s even better! Here’s an example of a belly-out option.

Light Wash Denim + a Simple Tee

If you want something casual but still stylish, this combo is a go-to:

  • Light wash or vintage-style denim

  • A plain cropped or fitted T-shirt

  • Bare feet or cozy socks

This look works especially well in homes with lots of natural light and neutral tones. It feels effortless and current —without feeling try-hard.

Pro tip: Choose denim with a loose fit or soft stretch. Wear it unbuttoned under the bump for a relaxed, lived-in feel. Overalls can also be cute!

Casual Maxi Dresses & “House Dress” Vibes

If you want to feel a bit more dressed up—but still comfortable—I often recommend a casual maxi dress you could realistically wear at home.

Think:

  • Soft cotton or modal fabrics

  • Loose, flowy silhouettes

  • Neutral or earthy tones

  • Minimal prints or subtle texture

This “house dress” vibe is perfect if you want something feminine and flattering without stepping outside the relaxed nature of an in-home session. I also have several house dresses in my client closet – so be sure to check it out!

What to Avoid Wearing

To keep your images timeless and cohesive, I recommend avoiding:

  • Loud patterns or logos

  • Neon or overly saturated colors

  • Stiff, structured clothing

  • Anything that feels uncomfortable or restrictive

If you’re constantly adjusting it, it will show.

Final Prep Tips for In-Home Maternity Sessions

  • Try everything on ahead of time and move around in it

  • Steam or lightly press garments if needed

  • Stick to a cohesive color palette (especially if a partner is included)

  • Trust that less is more—simple styling always wins

A Quick Note on Tidying Up (Without the Stress)

You don’t need a perfectly styled or spotless home for an in-home maternity session. Truly. These sessions are about real life and connection—not perfection.

That said, it can be helpful to mentally identify a few spaces you might want to use during your session—often a bedroom, living room, or a window-heavy corner of your home. Once you’ve picked those areas, simply remove any obvious clutter as needed (think stray cords, stacks of mail, or random items on surfaces).

No deep cleaning required. No staging your entire house. Just a little breathing room in the spots we’ll be using so the focus stays on you and this season of life.
