Preparing Baby for a Newborn Lifestyle Session: A Day-of Timeline for Parents

If you’re preparing for a newborn lifestyle session, you might be wondering how to set the stage for a smooth and stress-free experience. As a Denver newborn photographer, I’ve captured many in-home newborn sessions, and I know that a little preparation can make all the difference. Here’s a simple, step-by-step timeline to help you and your baby have a relaxed and enjoyable session.

1 Hour Before the Session: Bath & Outfit

A warm bath can help soothe your baby, making them more comfortable and relaxed. If you prefer, simply washing their hair with warm water can have the same calming effect while keeping the process simple.

Once your baby is clean and dry, dress them in the outfit you’ve chosen for the session. Keep in mind that soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully in natural light and won’t distract from your baby’s delicate features. If your photographer prefers a swaddled look, a simple onesie or just a diaper underneath can make transitions easier.

30 Minutes Before the Session: Feeding Time

A well-fed baby is a happy baby! Give your newborn a full feeding while keeping them awake to ensure they eat enough.

Pro Tip: You can usually tell if your baby is full by observing their hands. If their hands are curled and relaxed at their sides, they’re likely satisfied. If their fingers are stretched out or their hands are near their face, they may still be hungry.

To avoid outfit mishaps, place a burp cloth or soft blanket over them while feeding.

While you’re feeding, throw a cozy swaddle or blanket in the dryer for a few minutes to warm it up—it’ll be a comforting touch for the next step. Lou Lou is my favorite shop for stretchy, breathable newborn swaddles.

15 Minutes Before the Session: Swaddle & Soothe

After burping your baby, take the warm swaddle out of the dryer and gently wrap them up. Dimming the lights can help create a soothing environment. Hold or rock your baby in your arms until the photographer arrives. This ensures they are calm and ready for beautiful, natural portraits.

By following this simple routine, you’ll help create the perfect conditions for a smooth and relaxed newborn session. As a dedicated Denver newborn photographer, my goal is to capture those precious first days in the most natural and stress-free way possible. If you’re in Denver, Arvada, Littleton, Castle Rock, or surrounding areas, and looking for timeless newborn photography, I’d love to chat about your session!
