Your Denver In-Home Newborn Session: What to expect
By Jessica Craig Photography
Bringing your new baby home is one of the most meaningful seasons of your life — and your newborn photos should reflect that. As a Denver-area newborn photographer, my goal is to create images that feel warm, emotional, and honest, while still carrying the artistic depth of cinematic storytelling.
If you’re considering an in-home newborn session in Denver, Littleton, Morrison, or the Foothills, here’s a complete walkthrough of what the experience looks and feels like. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, I want you to feel completely prepared, comfortable, and excited for the most beautiful, stress-free session.
A Relaxed, Baby-Led Approach
Your newborn session will never feel rushed or posed. I blend lifestyle, documentary, and cinematic photography to tell the full story of your baby’s earliest days. That means:
-
We follow your baby’s cues — feeding, diaper changes, snuggles, and breaks are all expected.
-
I guide you gently, but never ask you to do anything that feels unnatural.
-
You’ll never feel pressure for your home, your baby, or your energy to be “perfect.”
Instead, the experience feels like a slow morning at home… with a photographer quietly shaping light, offering direction, and capturing authentic connection in a warm, intentional way.
Before Your Session: Simple Prep That Makes a Big Difference
Most families are surprised by how little they need to do before I arrive. Here’s what I typically recommend:
Warm the house
Newborns relax more easily when they’re warm, especially if we’re capturing un-swaddled or skin-to-skin moments.
Turn off overhead lights & bright screens
This reduces color casts and overstimulation. Natural window light is always the most flattering for baby and for cinematic layering.
Feed baby right before I arrive
A full belly leads to a calm, sleepy baby — but awake babies photograph beautifully too.
Dress baby first (and cover with a burp cloth if feeding after)
This avoids waking baby by changing clothes after a feed.
Newborn clothing can vary greatly in sizing, so I recommend planning Baby’s outfit early and finding something that will fit well. If you’re having a hard time finding an outfit that fits your newborn, I recommend trying H&M’s preemie size, which fit very well on most newborns from 6-9 pounds.
Light tidying in just 2–3 areas
You do not need a spotless home. I typically use:
-
Primary bedroom
-
Living room
-
Nursery (if you have one)
If needed, I’ll gently move small items to simplify a space and bring focus back to connection.
When I Arrive: Finding the Best Light in Your Home
The first 5 minutes of your session are simply me walking through your home and looking for light.
Every home photographs beautifully. Truly. Even dark homes, small homes, or remodel-in-progress homes are full of gorgeous little pockets of light.
I look for:
-
Soft directional window light
-
Backdrops that feel calming and warm
-
Neutral tones that complement a cinematic color palette
From here, I build the session around what your home naturally offers, which is what makes in-home newborn galleries feel personal and not one-size-fits-all.

How the Session Flows
1. Baby with Parents
We begin with the moments that anchor your story: baby in your arms.
These are gentle, emotional, and connection-forward. I offer small prompts to help you relax and be present.
2. Baby on the Bed or in the Crib
These shots lean more cinematic — simple textures, deeper tones, and intimate compositions that look timeless.
3. Details
Tiny fingers, eyelashes, swaddled profiles, and the way your baby curls into your chest. These are captured documentary-style with a cinematic finish.
4. Siblings
I never force toddler or sibling shots. Instead, I let them warm up naturally and approach baby in their own time. The results are genuine and joyful.
5. Lifestyle Moments Throughout
Feedings, rocking, diaper changes, burps, yawns — these everyday moments become the images you cherish most.

My Editing Style: Warm, Neutral, and Cinematic
This is where your gallery takes on the signature look I’ve become known for in the Denver newborn photography world.
Expect:
-
Warm, neutral tones with hints of olive and clay
-
Soft film-like contrast
-
Green-brown shadows for cinematic depth
-
Skin tones that stay natural, creamy, and timeless
-
Subtle grain for an elevated, artistic finish
Your gallery will feel polished and cinematic… without ever losing the authenticity of your baby’s real life story.
How Long Does an In-Home Newborn Session Take?
Most sessions last 1.5–2 hours, depending on baby’s needs. I never rush feeding, soothing, or breaks — these are part of the story and add richness to your images.
What to Wear (and What Photographs Best)
I send all newborn clients a full styling guide and help coordinate outfits in warm, muted earth tones that complement my editing style.
Best choices include:
-
Creams, warm beiges, muted olives, clay browns, taupes
-
Simple textures like knits, linen, and cozy loungewear
-
Light neutral swaddles and blankets
I always say: Comfort first. Warmth second. A soft, cohesive color palette third.
That combination photographs beautifully every time.
After the Session: When You’ll Receive Your Gallery
You’ll receive your full gallery within 2–3 weeks, edited in my signature cinematic style. Many families choose to order albums or frames, which I can design for you.
These images are meant to feel like heirlooms — honest, warm, and full of connection.
