When to Book Your Newborn Photographer in Denver, Morrison, Littleton & Boulder

Becoming a parent is one of life’s most beautiful and transformative experiences—and capturing those early days with your baby is something you’ll never regret. The newborn stage passes in the blink of an eye, and those tiny details—wrinkled toes, soft lashes, sleepy smiles—should be documented.

If you’re wondering when to book your newborn photographer in the Denver or Boulder area, this post will walk you through exactly what to expect and how to plan ahead.

Why Timing Matters for “Posed” Newborn Photography

The best time for posed newborn photos is typically within the first 2–3 weeks after birth, when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl up into those sweet, cozy poses. Their features are still so tiny and fresh, and they tend to settle easily in parents’ arms.

That said—your baby’s safety and comfort come first. If you need extra time to rest or recover, or if your baby spends a few days in the NICU, don’t stress. If your baby is born early, make sure to account for their adjusted age.  My newborn sessions are designed to be flexible, relaxed, and baby-led. Beautiful images can be created at any age, but posed photography best done during these first few weeks.

If you are looking for more natural, casual newborn photos for your newborn and family, this is  called newborn lifestyle photography, and it can be done in-home or in a studio at essentially any age. Since newborn lifestyle session don’t involve posing and don’t require the baby to be sleeping soundly, you can schedule these sessions for the 1st week or 8th week, whatever you most prefer.

When to Reserve Your Session

I recommend booking your newborn photographer during your second trimester—ideally around weeks 20–28 of pregnancy. This ensures you’ll have a guaranteed spot on my calendar, especially during busy spring and fall months when family sessions also fill up quickly.

When you book, I’ll reserve space around your estimated due date, and once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize your exact session date based on how you’re feeling and baby’s feeding or sleep rhythms.

Booking early also gives you time to:

  • Plan wardrobe and styling (I’ll help with that!)

  • Decide between an in-home session or one at The Cottage at Conifer, my cozy indoor-outdoor mountain studio

  • Ask questions and get comfortable with what to expect

What if Your Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Babies rarely arrive on their due date—and that’s completely okay. Because I reserve a limited number of newborns each month, there’s always flexibility to adjust your session date forward or back.

If your little one arrives early, we can schedule sooner while your baby is still in that sleepy stage. If your baby arrives a little later or you need more recovery time, we can capture a mix of both sleepy and more awake moments for a slightly older newborn look—these sessions are often just as magical.

What if Your Baby Is Already Here?

If you’ve already welcomed your baby and are realizing you didn’t book photos yet—don’t panic! Lifestyle newborn sessions don’t rely on intricate posing or props, which means we can still create a stunning gallery at 3, 4, or even 8 weeks old. These slightly older newborn sessions tend to have more eye contact, personality, and sweet connection moments.

Reach out as soon as possible, and I’ll do my best to fit you in.

What Makes My Newborn Sessions Unique

Whether you’re in Denver, Littleton, Morrison, or Boulder, my newborn sessions are designed to be calm, natural, and baby-led. Rather than stiff poses or elaborate props, I focus on capturing your family’s connection—the way you hold your baby, the way they nestle into you, and the little in-between moments that tell your story.

Sessions take place either:

  • In your home, where everything feels familiar and comfortable, or

  • At The Cottage at Conifer, my light-filled studio tucked in the foothills west of Denver, perfect for cozy, timeless newborn imagery.
